Girls About Town

  • Recorded at Chelsea Sound Studios in New York City, sometime between March and October 1980.
  • The four songs on the EP were recorded in one take each in a six hour session on 24 track recording machines.
  • The session cost $1000 to produce, and the pressing was limited to 1500 on the Smithereens own d-tone label.
  • The EP was produced by the Smithereens and mixed by Alan Varner.
  • The cover art was done by Justine Strait.

Beauty And Sadness

  • Recording began on October 29, 1982 in Studio B at the Record Plant, New York City.
  • Recording recommenced in January 1983 in Studio A and continued over the next few months.
  • 3000 discs were pressed of the original Little Ricky release, at a cost of about $5000 to produce.
  • The original EP was recorded and mixed by James. A Ball (JAB)
  • The EP was re-mixed by Pat DiNizio and Ed Stasium at Right Track, New York City in November 1987.

Especially For You

  • The album was recorded at the Record Plant, Studio C in NYC, beginning April 5, 1985 with five songs.
  • Sessions resumed on December 27, 1985 in Studio B, and the album was completed in ten to eleven days, at a cost of about $12,000.
  • James A. Ball was the associate producer, and he also engineered the album along with Gray Russell, Carol Cafiero, Paul Special, and Frank Pekoc.
  • The album entered the Billboard 200 chart on August 16, 1986 at #170, hit its highest position of #51 on February 28, 1987, and stayed on the chart for a total of 50 weeks.

Green Thoughts

  • Recording sessions began in December 1987, just three weeks after the "Especially For You" tour ended.
  • The basic tracks for all songs were recorded in two days at the Capitol Tower, Studio B, in Hollywood, CA.
  • The entire album plus b-sides and outtakes (some 30 tracks) were recorded and mixed in 16 days.
  • Engineering was done by James A. Ball, assisted by Peter Doell, and production was coordinated by Mike Hamilton.
  • The working title for the album was "Four More Respected Gentlemen."
  • The album entered the Billboard 200 chart on April 19, 1988 at #131, hit its highest position of #60 on May 7, 1988, and stayed on the chart for a total of 31 weeks.

  • Recorded in the spring/summer of 1989, at American Recording, Rumbo Recorders, and the Grey Room, Los Angeles, CA.
  • The album took five weeks to complete, and was recorded on three 24-track machines linked together.
  • Paul Hamingson engineered the album, with assistance from Gina Immel, Shirley Greer, and Jim Dineen.
  • The album entered the Billboard 200 chart on November 18, 1989 at #99, hit its highest position of #41 on March 31, 1990 and stayed on the chart for a total of 38 weeks.
  • The Smithereens gained their first Top 40 single in "A Girl Like You," which peaked at #38 on March 10, 1990, and stayed there for two weeks.

Blow Up

  • Recorded in three to four months during the spring of 1991 at A&M Studios, and Brooklyn Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA.
  • The working title was "Chicago Deadline."
  • This is the first album to have been digitally mixed, which was done at A&M and The Grey Room.
  • Paul Hamingson engineered, with assistance from Randy Wine, John Aguto, Scott Stillman, and Lori Fumar.
  • The album entered the Billboard 200 chart on September 28, 1991 at #141, hit its highest position of #120 on October 5, 1991 and stayed on the chart for a total of 3 weeks.
  • The group's highest reaching single was from this album, when "Too Much Passion" hit #37 on March 14, 1992 and held that position for 5 weeks on the Billboard charts.

  • The album entered the Billboard 200 chart on May 14, 1994 at #133, which was also its highest position, and stayed on the chart for 2 weeks.
